Things We Know About WoW Classic Summer Bowl
This event has many basic elements that may make it successful. Blizzard approved the "World of Warcraft" classic esports event for the first time, and included the popular broadcast genius, the onlooker mode of the game and the participation of some classic classic top players, so this game is bound to succeed. However, some factors that play a role in other directions may cause the event not to have the same appeal as some past World of Warcraft esports events.
Facts have proved that Blizzard's participation in the developer in any capacity is a turn, but compared to the Arena World Championship and the Mythical Dungeon International competition, the prize pool for this event is relatively small. With only $4,000 per region, the event has not even reached the prize pool of the Classic Duelers League tournament hosted by former Method streaming Tipsout.
Although the prize pool may affect the morale of the game, this has not prevented the top teams of the best classic guilds in the world from bringing the best players.
Competitors include players from APES, who defeated famous bosses such as Ragnaros and Onyxia, and won the world's number one killer. With the talent of the guild, the European final of this event is between two different teams representing the guild.
In terms of ratings, the finals in North America are better than in Europe. According to data from Twitch statistics website SullyGnome, the 7-hour broadcast on July 4 attracted an average of 5,761 viewers. At the same time, in the APES to APES finals in European time, after 6 hours of talk time, it attracted an average of 4,896 spectators.
Both of these numbers are lower than what the Classic Duelist Alliance can achieve. Recently, on June 19th, the European one-on-one fighting competition finals attracted an average of 8,684 viewers on Tipsout's personal Twitch channel, and the highest ratings of CDL events reached 13030, compared with 7467 in the Summer Cup.
CDL competitions have completely different types of PvP competitions. Compared with one-on-one fighting, the more direct and direct nature may have greater potential to attract a wider audience, just as many fighting games in Evo and other events attract a large audience.
On the other hand, someone can see that CDL has stronger ratings and conclude that the CDL's grassroots, community-driven nature makes it more meaningful in the community.
In the past few years, some of the most influential audience figures produced by World of Warcraft have come from grassroots "competition to world first" events, and Blizzard did not officially participate. It turns out that those events receive more attention than recognized Blizzard events (for example, the International Mythical Dungeon World Arena Championships).
It's hard to be sure that Blizzard's summer bowl game attracted the most contributions from mediocre spectators. However, just as people cannot expect to spend a good time in the pool immediately after immersing their toes in the water for the first time, the esports potential of World of Warcraft also makes Blizzard dive. Otherwise, the probability that the game will produce a lot of things through e-sports is very small.
