Path of Exile 2: Legacy of the Vaal Walkthrough

Legacy of The Vaal is the third chapter's main questline in Path of Exile 2. This act introduces players to challenging environments, numerous side quests, and powerful bosses. Here's a detailed guide to help you navigate through Act 3 and complete the questline.

How to Start "Legacy of the Vaal" Questline

The questline begins once you travel to the Ziggurat Encampment after passing through the Sandswept Marsh. Speak to Alva, Oswald, and The Hooded One to receive the directions to move forward. You'll then be sent to explore the Jungle Ruins, which are populated with undead adventurers, cannibals, and other dangerous creatures.

First Major Area: Jiquani's Sanctum

Objective: Look for Small, Medium, and Big Soul Cores hidden within this area.

The area is a labyrinth with several chambers where you need to search for two Generator Engines. These are located on opposite sides of the map, so once you find one, the other is in the opposite direction.

Boss Fight 1: Zicoatl

Zicoatl is a challenging boss that uses multiple elemental attacks, with resistances to physical, cold, and fire damage. Here's how to handle its moves:

Laser Grid: A series of directed or spread-out laser blasts that can be dodged if you pay attention to its arm movements.

Laser Barrier: A horizontal sweeping attack that's easier to dodge.

Slam Attack: If you get too close, Zicoatl slams the ground with its snake head arms, dealing significant physical damage.

Triangle Attack: A red triangle pattern on the floor. Stand on the point where the floor is not marked to avoid damage.

Laser Shot: A targeted laser that's easy to dodge.

Once defeated, you'll obtain the Big Soul Core. Go back to the Ziggurat Camp, speak to NPCs to trigger the next objective, and insert the Soul Core in the Canal Mechanism.

Activating The Flood Mechanism

In the Matlan Waterways, you'll need to activate levers and clear the canals. After activating 7 mechanisms, you'll face several elite enemies before reaching the Flood Mechanism Activation Lever. Once activated, the water levels drop, and you can proceed to the next area.

The Drowned City and The Pinnacle of Filth

With the water levels lowered, a new area opens up: the ancient Vaal city surrounding the Temple of Kopec. To access the temple, you need the Temple Door Idol, which is guarded by the Queen of Filth at the Pinnacle of Filth. Defeat her to obtain the Idol and progress.

Boss Fight 2: Xyclucian, The Chimera

Xyclucian is a winged beast that uses elemental attacks, making it a tricky boss to fight. Here's how to deal with its abilities:

Fire Breath: A cone of fire causing heavy damage and ignition.

Ice Breath: Slows the ground and follows with Acid Spit, which causes poison damage.

Acid Spit: Creates poison puddles on the ground.

Ground Slam: A circular AoE physical damage.

Column Perching: The Chimera will perch on columns, which you need to destroy to make it fall and stun it briefly. Take advantage of this moment to deal heavy damage.

Xyclucian is resistant to fire, cold, and lightning, so players using elemental damage may need to switch strategies or utilize other damage types. After defeating Xyclucian, collect the Inscribed Ultimatum Quest Item to complete the Trials of Chaos quest.

Next Steps: Jiquani's Machinarium

After defeating the Chimera, head to Jiquani's Machinarium to find Small Soul Cores needed to activate Stone Altars within the Labyrinth. You'll need to solve puzzles and battle enemies to progress. You'll also encounter Blackjaw, The Remnant, an optional but challenging boss in the labyrinth.

Boss Fight 3: Blackjaw, The Remnant

This boss is immune to fire and physical damage but is weak to cold. Here's what to expect from Blackjaw's attacks:

Phase 1: Blackjaw uses an upward slash at mid-range and a ground slam at any distance. Avoid these attacks as they can deal lethal damage.

Phase 2: Blackjaw combos several fire projectiles, upward cleaves, and crescent moon cleaves, which can cause heavy damage.

Phase 3: Blackjaw performs a combo of slam attacks with changing directions. Watch its movements carefully and dodge accordingly.

After defeating Blackjaw, you'll gain a reward that includes permanent Fire Resistance and valuable loot.

Conclusion

By following this guide, you'll be able to navigate through Legacy of the Vaal, defeating key bosses, solving puzzles, and completing objectives to unlock the next parts of the story.
